Part 2: ASR VMware – Azure Environment Prep

Previous Post in Series: Part 1: ASR Deployment Planner Tool

Welcome back folks. In the last post we looked at the ASR Deployment Planner Tool, used it to profile our VMware environment and provide a report of what that environment may look like/cost in Azure. In this post we’ll be preparing our VMware and Azure environments for enabling disaster recovery to Azure.

Our first task will be to take care of a couple of requirements in our Azure subscription, namely the deployment of an Azure Recovery Services Vault and a Virtual Network…so let’s do that.

Part 1: ASR Deployment Planner Tool

Before you even start putting together a plan for migrating an environment to Azure, you’ll want to know some of the specifics of that environment, for example:

  • VM compute – vCPU and RAM footprint
  • Disk performance usage – Peak Read and Write IOPS (Data Churn)

You’ll also want to know things like:

  • Required on-premises infrastructure footprint to facilitate replication
  • How much bandwidth is required to meet your chosen RPO (Recovery Point Objective)
  • VM replication eligibility – e.g. Server 2008 32 bit is not supported in Azure
  • Indicative costs for replication to Azure, including scheduled DR Drills

Enter the Azure Site Recovery (ASR) Deployment Planner Tool.  In this guide we’re going to go through the step-by-step process for both profiling our on-premises environment and then generating a report based on that information…so let’s get to it.

Azure Site Recovery: VMware to Azure

Quick Links

In this guide series we’ll be going through all the necessary steps to replicate a VMware environment to Azure for DR purposes.  To achieve this we’ll be making use of the Azure Site Recovery service but before we get into things, let’s have a quick overview of the components of ASR and their place within the environment/solution:
